Maintenance Update

Sunday last:
I nipped down to Winchcombe station as 2807 was due in.  Spoke with Ben (the driver) and he was happy with the steam heating; vacuum; and over the moon about the brakes (which clearly took him by surprise when he first applied them!).

I checked the steam heat connection (where I'd noticed the apparent puff of steam where it was not expected, last week).  There is no safety valve here (so that theory died).  There was no steam leak at all ... so, I have no idea what the cause was ... but it's gone away!

Monday last:
Surprised to see Foremarke Hall in service - it was a marketing day!  I was giving a lighting-up training to a new recruit, Peter, so we did the practical on 2807.  Peter spotted a couple of boiler tubes with ash in them!  Val H sold 3 boot scrapers for us!

Wednesday last:
I'm a bit vague about Wednesday.  I think no one else turned up, so I did a spot of chair painting and then went home!

Saturday 23rd:
During the week, I had totally re-vamped our yard notice board.  New pale blue background.  New photos of 2807 between 1981 and 2012.  Adverts for boot scrapers, teddies and 00 wagons.  My thanks to Steve & Stu who helped me formulate this new design, which is more of a window on our sales than just a history of the restoration.  At the Board Meeting in the afternoon, I asked who had noticed it when they arrived ....

Snippets of interest from the Board Meeting:
The Boiler Inspector was very happy with the operation of the safety valves, after we'd improved the seating of them.  New springs are still awaited for them, as the manufacturer discovered a flaw in one and is redoing it.
Though the RHS eccentrics had been overhauled this winter, the LHS have not, because Rod (machine shop) became ill, and Race Trains were pressing us into service.
The tubes had not been air-cleaned (we noticed on Monday!).
Ingo has completed the CAD data for the new regulator valve, but the 1st prospective supplier couldn't handle CAD; the 2nd couldn't handle computers; the 3rd can make a sand casting; the 4th can 3-D print moulds or patterns.
On the sales front, 00 scale wagons are no longer profitable (so we won't make any more); there's a new teddy in the offing, provisionally called Laverton Lil.
Meanwhile, Val H sold 2 boot scrapers today.  :-)

2807 is in service this weekend, and Tuesday & Wednesday.  Nothing rostered beyond that, yet.

Maintenance Update

Really, there was only Bruce working on the loco today.  Gil was in for the morning, but seemed to mainly do paperwork (signing off work done, I think).  Then there were two FLA meetings (probably one for the trustees and the other was their AGM, I believe).

Anyway, the interesting thing was Bruce's discovery.  For a long time, drivers have complained about their difficulty in maintaining vacuum in the reservoir.  Even this last week, they could only hold 21 inHg, whereas the reservoir should hold 23 inHg and the train pipe 25 inHg.  The vacuum pump has often had the blame, and been stripped, cleaned and twiddled with;  the rubber seal within the vacuum cylinder was also blamed, and we had the cylinder out, cleaned, new seal, etc.; the vacuum relief valve (commonly known as the pepper pot) was blamed, claiming it was relieving itself at 21 instead of 23.

Bruce has previously had it off and set it to 23.  Today he removed it again and checked it - it is still set perfectly at 23 inHg.  However, what he noticed was that the cover part (that gives it its name "pepper pot") came into contact with the central spindle of the valve internals.  When the top was screwed on tight, it appears that the spindle was being depressed by about 150 thou'.  Therefore, vacuum was being lost continually!  ... or continuously, whichever you like.  So, no wonder the driver couldn't maintain 23; no wonder the pump couldn't maintain 23.  So, Bruce  filed off a few thou' on the top of the central spindle (you can see that there was ample exposed thread to do that) and re-fitted it.  Sunday will be the test!



There are four outstanding issues that have been raised:

1) The tender steam heating relief valve blows off at 40 psi.  This is a strange complaint, since (a) it has been specifically set to blow at 40 psi; (b) the railway told us to do it at 40 psi, and (c) Carriage & Wagon told us not to exceed 40 psi because of the frailty of some of the hoses on the coaching stock!  Perhaps someone should tell the driver???

2) The RHS cylinder valve spindle packing is blowing steam. This is not a big problem to re-pack it.

3) The bolts on the running board retaining the two large stays from the smokebox are loose.  We are aware that these ought to be fitted bolts (and currently they are not).  However, being round-headed bolts, we can't currently tighten them!  :-)   So, we'll get the holes drilled and bolts made to fit ... in due course.

4) Some bolts on the running board are loose.  I was told of those on the RHS last week, and I fixed two of them; the third could not be tightened - the mole grips could not hold the (round) head firmly enough to be able to tighten the nut.  It certainly won't come loose!  No one told me there were some on the LHS, too!

Anyway, rain thwarted much play.  I was painting rail chairs (would you believe).  The Flag & Whistle has sold three, to date this year; the Coffee Pot (at Winchcombe) has sold none so far.

2807 appears to have run totally satisfactorily during the week (on race trains on Weds & Fri);
She is in service on Sunday 17th (which is either tomorrow, today or a few days ago, depending when you read this email). She is then in service on Friday 22nd for Fire & Drive; followed by service trains on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th.  There is no loco roster beyond that.

At The Races

Imagine my utter surprise to see, as I pulled into Toddington this morning, 2807 at the head of the race stock!  I thought we were on standby, but it transpires that there are two trains on Weds, Fri & Sun (= the dining train) and we are rostered for one of them on each day.  You only find out by looking on the sheet in the GWSR mess coach - which I did last week, but that was before 2807 had its fitness-to-run exam on Saturday.



So, here she is departing Todders with the race day brunch train.  I could tell from the steam emanating from beneath the coaches that the steam heating is working OK!  If you look closely at the second photo (as enlarged in the 3rd) you can make out the newly-clad-with-insulation heating pipe that we fixed on Sunday.  The puff of steam in front of it might be from the safety valve on the steam heating, which limits pressure to about 40 psi.   .. well, I hope that's where it's from!  :-))


There was no one else from our group at the railway, so after painting a few rail chairs, I left early; bumping into Stuart who had just brought some things down and was collecting two 2845 00 models that were to have been converted into 2807 ones.

I guess the chaps will turn up on Saturday, as the loco will be on standby (I assume) and will also need a warming fire for Sunday service.

Think of me, standing out in the perishing cold tomorrow on crossing duty at Race Course station!

Maintenance Update

It was only 2 degrees when I arrived at Todders, just before 9 am.  2807 was not over the pit, because 5542 had been clearing out its ashpan, so I couldn't get underneath to make a start at dismantling the steam heating pipe.  There was 10 psi on the "clock", so I opened the steam heating valve in the cab to see if that was enough to push through the pipes.  Opening the valve at the front of the loco (visible in the attached photos) there were gurgling noises, and soon some yeuky water spurted out.  It took about 15 minutes in total, but it cleared the water in the front pipe and steam finally trickled out.  It struck me afterwards that it was a good thing to have done, otherwise there is a good chance that David & I would have got wet when undoing the front pipe (because it's the low point).  My real thought was that it would warm up the pipe, because it was a tad cold out there!

I also noticed that the steam trap beneath the tender was pushing out water (good!) and I opened the rear valve for a short while, and as soon as I closed it, a small trickle of water came out of the bottom of the valve, which demonstrates that Bruce's idea of drilling a drain inside the valve works!  This idea came out of last year's problem of a small amount of water trapped within the valve when it closes froze, and modified the shape of the internals!

Anyway, the 5542 chaps shunted us over the pit, and David & I began undoing the nuts & bolts and removing the front pipe section. David cut the pipe, then we offered it up and marked where we thought it should be welded together.  Lots of trotting back & forth between loco and our work bench.  The first attempt at tack-welding the pipe together somehow appeared to get the bolt hole roughly 45 degrees out of line!  Back to the drawing board.  We figured it was more sensible to hold the pipe in place on the loco and tack-weld it in situ.  G-clamp and rope did the trick.  David found a huge (and heavy) 3-phase extension cable, such that power could reach our welder, and he did the job properly.

I was little more than a gopher, most of the time.  On Saturday, the "A Exam" revealed several minor items.  Three loose nuts on the running board.  One missing nut on a bracket.  Brakes not good enough.  GWSR chaps came and started fixing these.  One could not figure out how to hold the head of round-headed bolts (on the running board).  I fetched our molegrips and fixed two of the three.  The third would not grip - it's clearly not going anywhere!  I also fitted a nut to the offending bracket (there was already one nut & bolt, so it was not in danger of going AWOL).  We left the GWSR chaps to grovel in the grease, adjusting the brakes!



David finished the welding at about 2 pm.  We put new insulation round the pipe and fitted it back in place.  We stopped for lunch and then called it a day.  Oh, and it snowed on us several times (not hard, though).

I still don't know when 2807 will be in service.  I deduce that we shall be in light steam this week as a standby in case 5542 or Foremarke fail.  Oh, and the trial run to Laverton on Saturday at 4.30 was a success.  Nothing ran hot.  Nothing fell off!

Winter Maintenance Summary


As reported previously, we got off to a flying start on this year’s winter maintenance by getting the axle box work done before Christmas. In January we re-started the work by replacing the safety valve springs with the spares and did a steam test. The valves  were different to those we had taken off. They performed better not lifting until about 220 psig and maxing out at 226 psig. Good though this is, we hope to improve on it by switching to square section springs which are even stiffer. These new springs were expected before now but due to a manufacturing fault one of them had to be replaced and so 2807 has gone into the season with the ‘old’ springs.

Other early work included a detailed examination of the retaining valve to establish why it seems to stick in service. Excessive clearances were found and the bore of the valve was found not to be true. So a new piston ring has been made, a new head machined, and the bore reamed true. Hopefully that has sorted the problem. The valve gear was inspected. There was much less wear and tear noted on the spindles than last year. More than we would like but at least it meant that no rectification work was required this year. So we cleaned up the valve heads and put them back in the loco.

The next job was to inspect the connecting rod big ends for wear. When the con rods were removed and the bushes and bosses measured there was little sign of wear. This was good news and meant that we did not have to proceed with the repairs to the white metalling in the bushes.  Whilst the con rods were off, we investigated the bottom pad on the LHS crosshead which had been using too much oil. The pad was found to be relatively loose. A new one was made to replace it. Then the motion was reassembled.

The packing rings in the piston rod glands had been noted as having excessive wear. New ones had been made before the winter maintenance period. These were fitted.

The Mason’s valve had failed on the last day of service. The problem was identified as a cracked sealing disc inside the valve. A new copper disc was made and fitted.


The reversing lever had been reported as having too much play.  The problem seemed to be with the arm on the wayshaft.  The tapered pin had broken at one end and there was significant movement of the arm relative to the shaft.  Simple fix?  The trouble started when the tapered pin refused to cooperate.  We had to buy a new drawing tool, use right angle drills, punches, heavy hammers, repair consequent damage to holes in the arm and the shaft before this “10 minute” job was finally finished!


Another job that didn’t go to plan was the intent to renew tapered motion pins & expansion link bushes. Unfortunately we only managed to get the RHS done. The problem was limited machine shop time, partly due to the prolonged period of bad weather.








A few other odds and sods were completed. For example, one of the unfinished cladding sheet jobs when the loco left Llangollen was to correct the number 5 cladding band. This had been put on as a straight band but really it needed to be a tapered band – correcting it is a simple, but time consuming, cutting and welding job and it wasn’t a high priority item. Well, finally and nearly 3 years later, we got round to doing it this winter.









The tender spring we removed in November had been refurbished. So the refurbished spring and our other spare were fitted to the trailing axle of the tender. That leaves the two middle axle springs to be refurbished and replaced at some future date but this is a low priority task now that the four corner springs have been done.

Turning now to our siphon vehicle, the wood required to replace the cladding was delivered and is now being fitted to phase one in place of the rather ‘weathered’ existing boards.  Phase one is just one corner of the vehicle, and work will now start of phase 2, replacing all rotten wood in the frames before that too is clad.  We are still planning the replacement of the roofing, and are looking for a way to do this in ‘bite sized’ pieces rather than a ‘big bang’.

Siphon progress

 The siphon G restoration is progressing.

 
This is the good restored bit. In the left foreground is one of the racks removed from the good end, underneath another rack which is still in position. It is acting as ballast for a plastic table which is filling the hole where a door was removed. The door next to it is finished except for painting and some metal fittings. Beyond that are some panels off the removed door and various other things to screen off the area below the restored louvres. The end of the carriage needs some more horizontal panels at the bottom. Wood has arrived for these vacant areas and has been cut to length, painted with two coats of primer/undercoat and are ready to be fitted - then no bodywork gaps - hooray its cold in here at present.
 
 
This is standing back from picture 1 and shows the condition of most of the internal paintwork. Luckily we will be replacing the side panelling of the carriage. The louvres above the panelling will be cleaned up and rejuvenated with linseed oil before repainting.









This picture is taken from about the same position as picture 2 but looking the other way. More racks to restore! Note the ceiling which is very flaky now but hopefully will clean up. In the middle foreground is our only means of warmth.










This is a workbench we made. On it, on blocks, is the removed door with panels off and the bottom member removed. The lump of hardwood perched on the door is marked up ready for cutting to make a new bottom. Note the GWR transfers for the sides when we finish them. The old bottom piece is on the foreground together with one painted horizontal panel for the carriage end.

Maintenance Progress

The locomotive is now out of service for winter maintenance.  Here No. 2807 is seen inside the shed at Toddington.




On Friday 4th January, the safety valves were tested and the springs removed.














On Saturday, the valve spindles were removed.  This requires removal of some of the running plates, and then disconnection of the operating rods.  This has to be carried out in a confined space, as is often the case.  The photo shows the left hand side being dismantled.










Then the valve cylinder front cover has to be removed and the valve spindle extracted from the front.  The photo shows the right hand side valve cylinder with the front cover removed.













The valve spindles were then measured to check for wear.

The total number of steaming days for 2012 was 65, with a total mileage of 3609 miles.
